by Juan Gabriel Vásquez
Already on the first pages I was drawn into the book – not into the story, but what the author said about life and how. The wisdom caught my attention. Very often I found myself thinking: impossible to express it better.
of course, it is also a great story, actually two in one book. One is the account of Laverde’s life. He got early involved into Columbia’s drug cartels. He flew Pablo Escobar’s cocaine airplanes into the US. The other one is about a law professor. The latter one is the storyteller in the present. He met Laverde briefly in the early nineties in the pool billiard bars in Bogota. Incidentally he got also shot when Laverde has murdered on the street. But the professor survived. I read his life as an example how the drug wars affected ordinary Columbian people. During his long physical and psychological recovery he tries to find out who Laverde was. In that way we find out how it was to be member of a drug cartel.
The drug wars marked Columbia’s faith for a long time This book gives you a very good idea how it might have been for many people – normal people otherwise – but marked by extraordinary circumstances.
