by Gabriel García Márquez
If you want to know everything the mechanisms of a dictatorship in the flavor of an old-fashioned despotism, you will find an all-encompassing picture in this book. Almost al modes and manners are depicted. Márquez wrote it during his stay in Franco’s Spain in the late sixties and early seventies. Despite the fact that the patriarch reigns in a Caribbean state, the similarities with Franco are obvious. Foremost all the eternity of his reign, the patriarch lived between 107 and 232 years, nobody knows since he was found surrounded by vultures, Franco kept his iron fist on Spain between 1936 and 1974.
It is not a very easy read. The story is told six times from different perspectives and it us like a stream. There are no paragraphs or dialogs, and seldom a point to end the sentence.
