by Larry Rohter
A book heavily promoted in Brazil since the author is highly controversial in this country. He dared to criticize and question some national legends the Brazilians have about themselves. But the biggest heresy was that he wrote about president Lula’s drinking habits. I thought this was a really puritanic (North-American) point of view. But the what made everything worse was, that the circle around the president wanted to expel the journalist. That is actually ironic, since he is married to a Brazilian and worked as a journalist from the “New York Times” at that time. Legally impossible and a stupid move in the eyes of the world public. The author is now very famous just for this controversial article. What a pity since I this is in my opinion his weakest article – as weak as almost all his articles and comments around current political affairs. It just looks to biased, and his long self-justification in the book proves mutually against the point he want to make. His strength are the articles about culture, technology and society My recommendation for the reader: skip the politics part, the remainder is a very interesting view on Brazil, its affairs and its people.
