by Ian McEwan
I had to laugh out loud very often whilst I listened to this audiobook. – Before I listened it I had heard a couple of reviews on the book – each pointing out a different core story: ranging from ironising the green movement to the corruption of the scientific community. It is a bit from all of it, but in the center of the story is professor Beard and his actually disgusting behavior: lazy, hoggish, unscrupulous, … but somehow you can relate to him. That is the big trick to keep the reader involved. Each scene of the novel is a beauty – there is no doubt. But a collection of beauties does not make a great and coherent novel. It is definitely not one. If you just want to have fun without expecting another masterpiece by McEwan = read it! I had a lot of fun: Beard faking a fictitious lover, Beard in the Arctic thinking he lost his frozen penis, Beard talking about saving the world and vomiting behind the curtain on stage etc.etc. – very, very funny.
