“Crónica de una muerte anunciada” was my first book I ever bought in Spanish – back in 1994. I think I read 3 pages -actually I translated word by word – and then I through it in the some dark corner.
Now I finally got to know what kind of fine crafted storytelling I missed for so long.
The story: The young señor Santiago Nasar was killed for reasons of family honour. The killers didn’t actually want to kill him and did everything to announce everywhere that they are going to kill him- apparently hoping that somebody will interfere. So everybody knew that Santiago will be killed, except himself. The setting itself is interesting, but what I liked even more is how it is told in back-flashes, repetitions, circular references in several levels. Very, very elaborated.
