by Peter Ustinov
Germans adore Ustinov. I am no exception. I think it is less due to his movie career, which is of course exceptional. I guess it is more hi personality. He appeared very often in German TV insisting that he speaks bad German while saying wise and profound things in German in a simple and clear manner: showing that he dominates the subtleties of the language. His life is so full of impossibilities, that your are not surprised about his seemingly inexhaustible source of anecdotes. That is what this book/audiobook is about: anecdotes an aphorisms lovely composed by the Bettina Foulon. It was published post hum. You won’t find this exact compilation in English, but I recommend with all my heart to read at least one of his many books of this kind. I guess it does not matter which one.
A man of Russian descent, born in England, exposed to the German culture by his father, wrote his first play at the age of 19, fought in the second world war, won the Oscar, and died as an old man who never stopped to make fun of himself ….. with all of this and many other extraordinary aspects not mentioned here – do you think you will be bored?
