by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
I bought them as a double-pack: “Fooled by Randomness” and “The Black Swan”. The main argument of both books is one of my favorite topics to argue and provoke other people: the role of luck in life. I would to say, that these are identical books. In “Fooled by Randomness” the argument is not as stringent and thorough as in its famous successor. The basic ideas are already there, but not carved out so sharply. On the other hand, it is more spontaneous, which makes it maybe a better read in terms of enjoyment during the pure act of reading.
It is a joy to read because Taleb is opinionated, makes fun of his own kind, serves well-known prejudices about the business world, and tells you on every tenth page how happy he is to have a lot of money. This allows him to do and mean whatever he wants. This reminds me to Schopenhauer, who also underlined the importance to be well “assured” in life; you shouldn’t worry about money in order to be free to think and enjoy life.
After ranting against almost everyone and everything, Taleb admits that he is equally driven by emotion as much as everybody else – he just knows about the fact. Finally he concludes that one should at least keep a certain posture in front of the weird life – live the stoicism.
I have to think about that.
