by Peter Scholl-Latour
Scholl-Latour is the Doyen of German post-war journalism. He is already over eighty years old and still travelling to Afghanistan and other hot spots of current political affairs. I bought this book because in the bookstore I read a chapter about Lebanon and the Hezbollah. He wrote it in 2005 and truly everything he describes and predicts there is what we are seeing right now. Unbelievable! Many of the Arabic political leaders he knows personally and interviewed them before they became leaders. He speaks many languages, including high Arabic. I only can recommend his essays and his coverage of the Muslim world. He knows what he is talking about. His pronounced and harsh style earned him many attacks: anti-semitism, anti-amercanism, senile old man, war apologist (he is in favour of a strong army) etc. I personally find him as journalist just spectacular, not necessarily his writing style but his knowledge is worth to be noticed and taken into account. Hopefully he is translated….
